A new program designed to encourage aliyah by anglo doctors is being eyed with some interest by hoped-for potential immigrants. Though the difference between salaries for Israel's doctors and the salaries of those abroad is significant, many doctors are investigating the possibility of aliyah.

The program, a joint initiative between the North American aliyah organization Nefesh B'Nefesh and the Absorption and Health Ministries, offers a maximum of $60,000 in grant money in addition to the regular immigrant benefits basket.  "We hope to bring between 1,000 to 2,000 doctors to Israel in the coming years," said NBN co-chair and former Israeli ambassador to the US Danny Ayalon.

Israel has suffered "brain drain" in the past few years, with hi-tech, medical and other research professionals abandoning the Jewish State for more lucrative financial opportunities abroad.  The Israeli government has seen the influx of North American olim as a promising offset to this trend.
