In light of the recent spate of attacks on elderly Israelis, MK David Rotem (Yisrael Beiteinu) has proposed a bill that would provide for an extra measure of protection for senior citizens. The measures, he said, would increase their security, as well as prompt local authorities to increase their supervision of areas where older people live. “This is our moral and ethical obligation,” Rotem said.
The bill would provide for free installation of an emergency call button in the home of any senior citizen. The button would be connected to the local police station, which would send out an officer to assist if the button were pressed. Elderly people who do not have bars on their windows or steel ("Rav-Barayach") doors would be eligible to have them installed at state expense. And, in the event that an elderly person is attacked, he or she would be eligible for free doctor visits and hospital treatment for all consequences of the attack, as well administrative costs for paperwork, and so on.
