Republican US Senator John Ensign plans to set forth a bill establishing a bipartisan commission to produce a new report on Iranian nuclear capability following the National Intelligence Estimate report last week that Iran has halted its nuclear program.

The NIE's report flies in the face of a 2005 intelligence report stating that Iran was working vigorously on developing a nuclear bomb. Last week's report was considered suspect by some Congressional Republicans, who believe Iran's nuclear program remains an imminent threat, and think the 2005 report is closer to the truth. Senator Ensign believes politics have interfered with the objective examination of the latest report, and hopes to reveal the truth about Iran's nuclear program through the new commission.
