Israeli-PA Negotiations To Start on December 12

The written understanding on behalf of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Israel at the Annapolis conference Tuesday evening calls for negotiations to begin at 7 p.m. on December 12. American Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice pressured Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas and Prime Minister Ehud Olmert to sign the agreement, which was read by American President George W. Bush.

The agreement leaves out any specific commitment by Israel to a timetable on the steps toward establishing a new Arab state, except that Israel "make every effort to conclude an agreement" for the proposed state by the end of 2008.
