Abbas Calls for Israeli Concessions

In a speech at the Annapolis conference on Tuesday, Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas called for Israel to withdraw completely to the 1948 armistice line, giving up Judea, Samaria, the Golan, and much of Jerusalem, including the Old City and the Temple Mount.  Israel must completely freeze Jewish growth in those areas, including natural growth, he said, and should open PA institutions in Jerusalem, remove checkpoints, and release terrorists.

Abbas did not indicate that he was willing to compromise over PA demands for Jerusalem, all land east of the 1948 armistice line, or citizenship for millions of foreign descendants of Arabs who fled Israel in the 1940s.  Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said earlier that Israel was ready for “unbearably difficult” change and “painful compromises.”
