The Knesset voted on Monday to officially make the Jewish National and University Library at Hebrew University Israel’s national library. The law that passed set the library’s goals and system of governance.
According to the law, which was proposed by MK Aryeh Eldad, the library will continue to be a branch of Hebrew University for the next three years, but will work to become an independent institution. The government will provide 50 percent of the library’s funding. Eldad expressed satisfaction with the vote, saying, “The State of Israel can use this law to fulfill its obligation to the Jewish people, the people of the Book.”
