French President Nicolas Sarkozy said Wednesday morning, "We are allies of the U.S.A. and we will fight for Israel's security." In a speech before the American Jewish Committeel in Washington, D.C., which awarded him its "Light Unto the Gentiles" prize, Sarkozy said: "Behind Israel there is the sea; Israel is a country with its back to the sea."
"I am accused of being unquestioningly supportive of Israel. I am not unquestioningly supportive but the world must guarantee Israel's security," he said. He repeated his statement that Israel is "a miracle," and explained that "as a place which every Jew in the world can go to if something happens to him, Israel's security is close to my heart. I do not agree with the policy of every government in Israel, but the subject of security is beyond any doubt."
