Campaign Against Arab National Service

The Arab youth organization Baladna has created a video clip discouraging Arab participation in national service.  The clip, which was translated and shown on Maariv on Thursday, shows a young Arab man considering civil service when a genie appears to discourage him.

The genie tells the young man that poverty and unemployment are unusually high in the Arab sector, and convinces him that he should not contribute to Israel.  The video clip ends with a warning “National Service, the first step to the Army.”  “Say no to National Service, yes to volunteering,” Baladna activists said, saying that while Arab youth should volunteer in their hometowns, there is “no point in discussing any form of service” that could benefit the state.

While Arab youth have traditionally avoided participation in any form of service, military or civil, National Service organizers recently suggested increasing Arab participation in civil service.
