IEC to Hire Non-Jews for Shabbat Work

According to Haaretz, the Israel Electric Corporation (IEC) plans to hire 150 non-Jewish workers who will work on Shabbat.  The plan is part of a larger project to regulate the IEC’s Shabbat production.

The move could affect certain hareidi-religious communities where residents avoid using IEC electricity on Shabbat due to concerns that the electricity was produced by Jews in violation of religious law.  Many of the communities use private generators instead, a practice that concerns government officials, who warn that the generators can be unsafe.
