UN Commission Head's Mea Culpa on Israel

Responding to criticism by U.S. President George W. Bush last week, UN Human Rights Council chairman Doru Costea said that his organization was far too critical of Israel, and not critical enough of the human rights abuses in the Palestinian Authority and other terror dictatorships.

"The body which I head must examine the actions of both sides equally, and we have not done that," said Costea, attributing the anti-Israel bias to a surfeit of Arab and African countries on the Council. The numbers give anti-Israel countries, “a certain power, but that does not mean that this power is always used wisely,” he said. "Clearly, from now on things need to change."
