1.81 million elementary and high school students will return to school on Sunday morning.  A strike threatened by teachers and parents in Arab communities has been cancelled, and approximately 460,000 Arab students will be among those returning to school.

The Arab sector strike was cancelled following a meeting between community representatives, the Education and Interior Ministries, and President Shimon Peres.  The government officials agreed to grant an additional NIS 100 million to Arab education, to spend NIS 21.9 million on increasing the hours of learning, and to establish four government committees to examine the state of Arab education.  The committees will submit their conclusions in late December.
