Russian Tourists Won't Need Visas

The government voted in favor of a resolution dropping the requirement of a visa from tourists entering Israel from Russia. Public Security Minister Avi Dichter voted in favor of the change.

In previous discussions, Dichter had warned that the change would encourage an increase in the number of criminals and prostitutes entering Israel. He was roundly criticized by Minister Avigdor Lieberman for voicing this opinion, which was seen as an expression of bigotry against Russian immigrants.

Dichter said Wednesday that while he voted in favor of the measure, he continues to stand behind his original professional opinion regarding the problems the change may create.
