Peres Denies Political Aims, Feels Pain of Katz Family

President Shimon Peres has denied that political motivations were behind his decision to reduce the life sentences of the five Israeli Arabs who brutally murdered 15-year-old Danny Katz in 1983. He claimed that he simply carried out a recommendation of the current and previous justice ministers.

President Peres also said he "respects the opinion of the parents" of the murdered child and "feels their pain," but he did not comment on their learning about the reduced sentence through the media instead of being notified by his office.
