Turkish FM Abdullah Gul Wins Presidential Election

Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul won the presidential election Tuesday in Turkey, making him the first Islamist to head the secular nation.

Turkey’s ruling AK Party won approximately 50 percent of the vote in early national elections last month.  The nationalist MHP and leftist CHP parties also managed to win enough mandates to enter the government.
Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan called early elections after secularists, including the Turkish army, did not allow him to nominate a fellow ex-Islamist as president.
