U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will meet with Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas sometime in September, according to a PA source. The U.S. State Department has declined to confirm the report.
The meeting is allegedly planned in order to help Abbas prepare for the international Middle East summit set for November, said the unnamed source. Assistance and support from the U.S. and Israel has been predicated on Abbas's past commitment not to reunite his Fatah faction with the Hamas terrorist organization. However, reports from Arabic-language media have indicated that efforts are underway for the two rival factions to resolve their differences.
