Canon Andrew White, the Vicar of the Anglican Church in the United States embassy in Baghdad, said Wednesday that the remaining Jews in Baghdad should flee the country. The Jews’ lives are in danger, White said. White, who has actively supported the community, said that a variety of groups have threatened to attack the Jews, and their safety cannot be guaranteed.
The Iraqi Jewish community is one of the oldest in the world, and in the early 20th century Jews made up as much as one third of Baghdad’s population. However, the vast majority of Iraq’s Jews fled the country after the establishment of the state of Israel due to anti-Semitism, and only a handful of Jews remain in the country.
