The city of Tel Aviv has announced that it will halt funding to the Association of Homosexuals and Lesbians. Aid to the group is usually NIS 60,000 a year, one-fifth of the group’s total budget. The aid was suspended after association chairman Mike Hamel announced that he plans to run in the next mayoral elections.
Deputy Mayor Yael Dayan explained that the city does not give financial support for groups that could use it for political purposes. If Hamel plans to run for mayor, she said, he needs to step down as chairman.
