Knesset Approves Heavy Fines for Smokers

The Knesset gave its approval on Wednesday to a law that would dramatically increase the fine for smoking in a public area.  Under the new law, smokers could be charged NIS 1,000 for smoking in public areas, as opposed to NIS 310-630 under existing laws.

According to the new law, business owners who fail to prevent smoking in their establishments could be fined up to NIS 5,000.  The law was created by MK Gilad Erdan (Likud) and MK Yoel Hasson (Kadima), and passed unanimously with 34 votes.
