Non-Israeli Arabs Claim Job Discrimination

Dozens of Arab residents of Jerusalem have filed a lawsuit against the city, charging that an ad seeking drivers discriminates against them.  The ad states that only those with Israeli citizenship should apply to serve as drivers for public school students.  The Arabs filing suit are not Israeli, but receive certain benefits as residents of Jerusalem, including the right to work in the city.

The city also asked that those applying to transport schoolchildren posses a weapons license or the ability to receive such a license, an ability usually restricted to those who have served in the IDF.  The Arabs called the requirement “unreasonable and illegal,” saying that it restricted candidacy for the position to Jews.  While thousands of non-Jews serve in the Israeli army, including many Bedouin Muslims, the vast majority of Israeli Arabs do not serve.
