Iran Increasing Ties to South America

Foreign Ministry officials expressed concern on Sunday over Iran’s increasing diplomatic efforts in South America.  Several Iranian embassies have recently opened in South American countries, they said, and each embassy has a large number of staff.  Economic ties between the countries have increased as well, they said.

Officials said that both Iran and Hizbullah had attempted to influence the Brazil-Argentina-Paraguay “triangle” for years, but that the past year had seen significant attempts to further spread Iran’s influence.  They explained that the new Iranian initiative was especially disturbing in that Iran and Hizbullah have carried out attacks on Jewish and Israeli interests in the region, including a 1994 Jewish center bombing in Buenos Aires that killed 85.
