Assad: Unconditional Talks Based on Golan Retreat

Syrian President Bashar Assad told the Syrian Parliament Tuesday that he is ready for unconditional peace talks with Israel but stated his own condition that Israel surrender the strategic Golan Heights.

He said Israel must do more than "send messengers," as was done earlier this year when United States House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi visit Israel and then Syria. "This is not serious," Assad stated after being sworn in to his second term as President. "They must provide us with guarantees that all of the Golan will be returned'

He also revealed that another country is mediating between Israel and Syria. Observers said he might be referring to Turkey.
