Assad Sworn Into Office for Second Term

Syrian President Bashar Assad began his second seven-year term of office Tuesday, when he was sworn in at a special parliamentary session. He was unopposed in the May 29 elections.

Assad was educated as a ophthalmologist in Britain and took office in 2000 after the death of his father, Hafez Assad. He has taken an adamant stance against Israel and has clamped down on pro-democracy activists.
