Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas urged Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi during their meeting Tuesday in Ramallah to convince Israel to give up security restrictions that were implemented in Judea, Samaria and Gaza in response to the 2000 intifada.

Abbas also asked Prodi to work together with the European Union to pressure Israel into halting its work on the security barrier and on Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria, and to return to the negotiating table.

The Italian leader arrived in Israel for a state visit on Sunday.
