Katzav’s Punishment: Parole

Outgoing President Moshe Katzav will be sentenced to parole according to a deal reached with state prosecutors, and will not face prison time or even community service. Katzav admitted to allegations of sexual harassment, while charges of more serious harassment and rape were dropped.

Kinneret Barashi, a lawyer whose client accused Katzav of rape, said Thursday that “Katzav’s plea bargain demonstrates that he has been lying the entire time.” Barashi accused Attorney General Menachem Mazuz of giving in to political pressure. Feminist groups and advocates for rape victims opposed the deal as well, and asked state prosecutors to reveal the reasons for the plea bargain.
