Ahmed Yousef the chief political adviser of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, stated Wednesday that Fatah and not Hamas staged the real coup in the Palestinian Authority (PA). "Our Hamas party won the Palestinian parliamentary elections and entered office under Prime Minister Haniyeh but never received the handover of real power from Fatah, the losing party," he wrote in the The New York Times.
Yousef asserted that Hamas "has consistently offered a 10-year ceasefire with the Israelis to try to create an atmosphere of calm in which we resolve our differences." He also charged that the United States and Israel caused the civil unrest in Gaza by arming the Fatah militia.
The political aide also said that for the first time in Gaza, order is being maintained and drug dealing clans are being disarmed.
