(IsraelNN.com) Newly elected President Shimon Peres promised the United Torah Judaism (UTJ) party that he would work to cancel or at least lower the profile of the planned homosexual parade in the capital if the Hareidi religious party would back him to head the country.

The religious community plans a massive protest against the event on Sunday. Police have issued a permit for the parade but have given themselves the option to change the route or cancel it if it appears it will cause security problems.

Hundreds of people protested against the parade in Jerusalem and B'nai Brak Thursday night and burned tires in the streets.
