Walid Ido, a Lebanese Member of Parliament known for his opposition to Syrian control in Lebanon, was killed in a bombing in west Beirut on Wednesday afternoon. Nine others were killed in the blast, including Ido’s son Khaled and two of his escorts. Dozens were wounded.
Lebanese sources reported that the blast was caused by a car bomb. The powerful bomb caused extensive damage to nearby buildings, and was heard throughout Beirut. It is not clear at this time if Ido was assassinated or if his presence at the site of the bombing was a coincidence. Five other bombing attacks were reported in Beirut in the past few weeks.
