The Knesset has begun to vote in a secret ballot, as provided by law, for the ninth President of Israel. The five-term of suspended President Moshe Katzav expires July 15. The first Knesset Members to vote were the three candidates, Labor MK Colette Avital, Likud MK Reuven Rivlin and Vice Prime Minister Shimon Peres (Kadima).
The rest of the MKs will cast their votes according to alphabetical order. The three Arab factions have said their nine votes will be divided among the three candidates.
