Poll Shows Peres Favored for Presidency

A Ma'agar Mohot (Brain Base) poll carried out for Voice of Israel government radio reveals that 70 percent of the public supports Vice Prime Minister Shimon Peres for President when suspended President Moshe Katzav's term expires in mid-July. The President is elected by the Knesset, but a strong public opinion may influence the vote.

Labor Knesset Member Colette Avital won 12 percent of the support from the respondents, and Likud MK Reuven Rivlin received eight percent, while the remaining 10 percent expressed no opinion.

The poll also disclosed that 62 percent of the public wants the Olmert administration to stay in tact at least until the final Winograd Committee report is issued.
