Peres: I Am Running for Presidency

Deputy Prime Minister Shimon Peres officially announced Wednesday that he will be running for the office of President of Israel. This will be the second time Peres contends for the job: previously, he ran against Moshe Katzav, the now disgraced President, and lost.

"It is no secret I was undecided for some time, after all I am not the youngest Knesset member," Peres said at a meeting of the Kadima faction. "I have carried out almost all of the county's top roles… I decided to take this post after many people urged me to, from the Prime Minister and Knesset members, through many people from the nation… who asked me to make this contribution, which I must say might be the last in my privilege to serve the country."
