American Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice told reporters en route to Germany Tuesday, "I don't...see my role as negotiating a ceasefire between Hamas and the Palestinian Authority." She asserted that "some Arab states" are helping halt the violence between the two factions and which has continued for more than year.
Secretary Rice was responding to a question by a reporter who told her that several commentators think "you were kind of wasting your time with the whole focus on the political horizon over the last few months and that you'd be better served to focus more on getting a sustainable ceasefire among the Palestinians."
She added that the continuing militia war between the two factions "underscores the need for there to be a political framework, a political horizon for those who want to pursue a two-state solution."
