Calls to Encourage Immigration from Russia

Minister of Immigrant Absorption Zeev Boim has called on the government to increase funding to immigrant organizations in order to encourage immigration from Russian and other CIS countries. There are approximately 700,000 Jews in Russian, Boim said, and the government has not made a sufficient effort to bring them to Israel.

MK Marina Solodkin (Kadima) called on the government to increase immigration from the Ukraine. The country is on the brink of civil war, she said, and due to the financial situation, more funding should be provided for Ukrainian immigration.

Approximately one million new immigrants have arrived from the CIS since the 1990s. Between 290,000 and 550,000 of the new immigrants are not Jewish.
