A guard at the orchards of Moshav Carmel in the southern Hevron Hills fired in the air early Tuesday morning in an attempt to ward off Bedouin trespassers, who then attacked him until police arrived.
The orchards are located in the Yatir Forest, about 10 miles south of the moshav. The guard was evacuated to Soroka Hospital in Be'er Sheva after suffering blows from the Bedouins, who were suspected of trying to steal farm equipment.
Area farmers have complained of thefts for more than two decades.
A similar incident occurred several months ago but ended in the death of one of the Bedouin trespassers on the nearby farm of Shai Dromi, who is awaiting trial for manslaughter.
