Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has announced his support for Vice Prime Minister Shimon Peres as the next President of Israel. "No one can match Peres in his efforts in the fields of space, science and technology," the Prime Minister said.
He added that the veteran politician, who is 82 years old, can restore the office of the Presidency to its proper position of stature. The current President, Moshe Katzav, is under suspension following impending indictments against him for alleged sexual offenses, fraud and breach of public trust.
Katzav defeated Peres in the last elections for President five years ago. Katzav's term of office expires July 15.
