The Muslim Brotherhood is facing an internal dispute after Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak ruled that political parties based on religion would be made illegal. The Brotherhood calls for the establishment of an Islamic Caliphate based on Sharia (Muslim law), and is currently in violation of the new laws.

Some members of the Brotherhood believe that they should change their party’s charter to eliminate any direct references to religion. Others refuse to compromise, saying that party principles such as “Islam is the answer” and “the Koran is our law” must remain in place.
