Egypt Worried About Gaza Tunnels

Egyptian officials said recently that Egypt has begun to worry about the many tunnels leading from Palestinian Authority-controlled Gaza to the Sinai Peninsula. The government fears that the Sinai could become a new front in the PA’s war on Israel, they said.

Egypt chose to support the tunnels for many years, explained Dr. Al-Mashat in the Al-Hayat newspaper, but since the PA took control of Gaza, the tunnels have begun to pose a security threat to Egypt. Egyptian politician Mohammed Basyouni warned that those threatening Egypt would be punished with “an iron fist.”

Egyptian police recently arrested two would-be suicide bombers who entered Egypt from Gaza and planned to attack Israelis vacationing in popular tourist locations in Sinai. Previous suicide attacks in Sinai have killed dozens, and have had a negative impact on the tourist industry, a major source of income for many locals.
