IDF Says PA ‘Fishermen’ Were Smugglers

The IDF has disputed claims by Palestinian Authority sources that the Israeli Navy fired at two fishermen plying their trade in waters near the Gaza-Egypt border early Sunday morning.

A navy vessel identified three suspicious PA boats Saturday night sailing in a closed military water area along the Gaza coast, heading for Egypt. The boats were ordered on their return from Egypt to halt but did not comply with the order.

The naval vessel opened fire, first with warning shots and then at the boats, according to the IDF. “These were not innocent fishermen, but smugglers,” said the IDF in a statement. The Navy caught smugglers in two separate incidents trying to bring more than a ton of explosives into Gaza last year.
