Iran has launched its first rocket into space, according to a report announced Sunday on the state-run television network. The Islamic Republic launched its first satellite in 2005 in a joint effort with Russia.

The head of Iran’s Space Research Center, Mohsen Bahrami was quoted as saying the space rocket or missile was built by the country’s Science, Technology and Defense ministries, but released no other details. It was not clear whether the craft was another satellite or a rocket.
