Former Israeli foreign minister Sylvan Shalom called upon the UN Security Council Friday to put in place harsh sanctions against Iran, leading to its complete international isolation. In an interview for IBA Radio, Shalom called for sanctions "like the ones that were put in effect against Libya and North Korea."

"We must stop being complacent, in Israel too," he said. "All Security Council resolutions must be such that enable military action against Iran, so that Iran knows that if it does not freeze the nuclear project, it may be attacked."

Shalom is a contender for the Likud leadership position.
