Egypt Arrests 56 Muslim Brotherhood Members

Egyptian authorities arrested 56 members of the illegal Islamist Muslim Brotherhood organization Thursday morning.

Egypt has been cracking down on the organization, which it had largely ignored last year. In January, the Egyptian prosecutor-general froze the assets of 29 businessmen who authorities said had ties to the organization.

Sa’ad al-Kitatni, head of the Muslim Brotherhood faction in the Egyptian parliament, spoke to reporters at a news conference Thursday.

According to the Inter Press Service news agency, al-Kitatni said that the group would not tolerate the government’s effort to “provoke the Brotherhood into forsaking its peaceful methods.” He added, however, ”this isn’t going to happen……. But we won’t hesitate to use any peaceful means available to defend ourselves.”
