Originally from Petersburg, Virginia, Ben Packer moved to Israel in 1999, where he served in the IDF's Givati Brigade in the Gaza Strip. Ben served as a Rabbi on campus at Univ. of North Carolina and at Duke Univ. Ben now serves as Director of the Jerusalem Heritage House (www.heritagehouse.org.il) and Co-Director of Young Jewish Conservatives (www.youngjewishconservatives.org). He lives in the Old City of Jerusalem with his wife and 6 children....

The current Israeli Government was not elected to not make mistakes, like the ones made by previous Israeli Governments. It was elected and formed to fix previous mistakes! Instead of doing that, its making major mistakes!

The most recent mistake was the opening of the road to Beit Furik, near Itamar, that allowed for the horrific murder of 2 Jewish parents last night. The next one will most likely be the removal of Jews from the site of what should be a new Jewish Community to be called "Shalem" between Itamar and Elon Moreh. This is all without to discuss all the mistakes being made in Jerusalem and on the Temple Mount on a daily basis. Mistake after mistake!

In so many ways, last night's attack brings everything currently happening together:

First, army leadership makes a horrible decision to severely punish a soldier for breaking an anti-Israel journalist's camera - right  near where the terrorist attack took place! The idiocy of this decision knows no bounds. Exactly when Israeli soldiers and police need strengthening and encouragement in the face of a wave of terror, this pathetic display of leadership is wholly unacceptable! (I served in Givati and am totally ashamed of recent decisions by "top officers". The soldiers in the field deserve extra support and attention for their valiant efforts that would undoubtedly be more successful if not for the numerous counterproductive regulations imposed upon them.)

Second, a new community is set up on land purchased legally and transparently by the Israeli Government years ago for the purpose of establishing a community on that exact spot. No support as of yet, of any kind, from the current Israeli Government. There is a  sense that its just a matter of time before the Jews are forcibly removed.

Third, Abu Mazen (yemach shmo v'zichro) declares in front of the entire world that he is officially no longer bound by the wretched Olso Accords. His party, Fatah, has even claimed responsibility for the terrorist attack!!! If there was ever a time to go back and fix mistakes - ITS NOW!!! Take back Kever Yosef and establish a permanent presence! Return to re-establish Homesh and Sa Nur! Recognize the new community of "Shalem"! Strengthen all the communities in the area! Surround the evil village of Beit Furik with checkpoints!

Now is not the time for new apartments in Maale Adumim or Har Homa (although those should be built as well) or any other fake gestures by this Government. Staring down a bunch of irrelevant anti-semites in New York will not combat the terror, concrete action will!

The Arabs claim this is all about Jerusalem and the Temple Mount. Therefore, all Jewish neighborhoods around the Old City of Jerusalem should be strengthened. Long overdue evictions of Arab squatters on Jewish-owned property should be executed immediately - especially the Yemenite Synagogue in "Silwan". Long delayed building permits for Jews should be approved in places like Shimon HaTzadik. A long requested Egged bus line should be approved to reach Kidmat Tzion. A permanent "Aron Kodesh" should be place at the Kotel HaKatan.

We all know that that our judgement is sealed on Yom Kippur. However, according to mystical sources, there is an extension until Hoshana Rabba. Not much time left for this Government's teshuva!
