The Exploitation of the Murder of Leon Klinghoffer

In a a world where Islamic Barbarism and Savagery has reached all time new levels with the beheading of the American journalist James Foley.

it was not that long ago that Abu Abbas of the Palestine Liberation Front hijacked the tourist filled Achille Lauro Cruise Ship and murdered in cold blood Leon Klinghoffer and threw him overboard with his wheelchair.

To pour salt on an open wound the New York based Metropolitan Opera run by Peter Gelb has outrageously decided to run an Opera with music by John Adams entitled, "The Death of Klinghoffer" despite heavy criticism from the Klinghoffer Family and Jewish Activists. The Opera is scheduled to open on October 20th in New York. Protests are being planned .

The Opera has been around since 1991 when it opened at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.Leon Klinghoffer was viciously shot in the head and thrown overboard with his wheelchair (he had suffered several Strokes so was wheelchair bound) on October 8th, 1985. Soon after the Premiere appeared, the daughters of Leon Klinghoffer issued the following statement which holds  true today as well , "We are outraged at the exploitation of our parents and the cold blooded murder of our father as the centerpiece of a production that appears to us to be Anti-Semitic". Peter Gelb is quoted as saying, "I'm convinced that the Opera is not Anti-Semitic".

The ADL,after speaking with him, got him to agree to cancel a global simulcast which he felt might fan the flames of Anti-Semitism worldwide, and agreed to include a message from the daughters of Leon Klinghoffer on its Program and Website which makes clear the serious objections to the Opera's biased portrayal of their father's murder and its sympathetic view of his terrorist killers.

This was a noteworthy attempt by the ADL to minimize the damage but did not go far enough. The Opera should have been canceled. It has no place in our world. Just to give the reader a glimpse of what the Opera stands for, I partially quote, Act 2, Scene 1 where the Arab Murderer sings an Aria in which he taunts Mr. Klinghoffer saying:" You are always complaining of your suffering but wherever poor men are gathered they can find Jews getting fat. You know how to cheat...America is one big Jew." If this is not outright and blatant Anti-Semitism to the absolute core then all have flunked Anti-Semitism 101. This Opera is glorifying the murder of an innocent, incapacitated, wheelchair bound man for its Shock Value and perceived Political Gain. No one in his right mind would condone such a murder just as no one in his or her right mind would condone the beheading of James Foley. Unfortunately, the Metropolitan Opera does a grave injustice by calling the Opera "Art" when in point of fact it is outright Anti-Semitism disguized rather poorly as "Art". The world has crossed so many red lines it doesn't even know the color of red anymore.

The Opera "Death of Klinghoffer" is unacceptable, inappropriate, and will teach young people all the wrong lessons. The Metropolitan Opera would do well to not only cancel the Simulcast but to cancel the whole thing. Mr.Klinghoffer deserves at least that much. He taught the world courage in the face of brutality. He does not deserve to be exploited and victimized all over again.
