The Murders and Zionism: Time For Answers
David RubinDavid Rubin is former mayor of Shiloh, Israel. He is founder and president...
The brutal murders of the three kidnapped boys have revealed terrible flaws in the system of terrorism prevention, but it's not just technical errors that need correction. The flawed police response to Gilad Sha'ar's emergency call that was ignored is but a symptom of a dysfunctional Zionism that has forgotten its purpose.
Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and his Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon have spent the past eighteen months making vacuous pronouncements about how Israel will hit the Hamas terrorists with "heavy punishment" and that "the long arm of Israel" will reach them. Other politicians in the coalition have warned of a "proper Zionist response", independent of military action. Indeed, it behooves us to examine just what that proper Zionist response should be.
I hereby call on the leaders of Israel to:
1.End the shameful, unofficial freeze in the granting of building permits to Jews in Judea and Samaria, in eastern Jerusalem, and in all parts of the liberated land of Israel. Every resident of Judea and Samaria knows that the supply of housing is much less than the demand. This is due to an unofficial Netanyahu-Ya'alon policy of choking the Jewish residents of Judea and Samaria by stifling their natural growth.
2. Establish a new Jewish city in the heart of Samaria. It is an outright betrayal of Zionism that the current government is aiding and abetting (in cooperation with the Americans) the building of Rawabi, a new Arab city in the heart of Samaria, while consistently preventing the establishment of any new Jewish communities.
3. Adopt the Levy Report as official government policy, which will immediately give the legal backing for a proud Jewish settlement policy.
4. Pass the Knesset bill affirming Israel as the nation-state of the Jewish People.
5. Require Zionist-Jewish education in every school in Israel. The amazing Jewish return to the Land of Israel in our times is a prophetic process that all segments of the population need to learn about.
Apologies to a world that hates us won't work, nor will pompous meaningless statements that aren't followed by action. The five points listed above are the minimal steps that are needed to restore Zionism to its Jewish roots. Are Netanyahu and Ya'alon prepared to meet the challenge?
