Originally from Petersburg, Virginia, Ben Packer moved to Israel in 1999, where he served in the IDF's Givati Brigade in the Gaza Strip. Ben served as a Rabbi on campus at Univ. of North Carolina and at Duke Univ. Ben now serves as Director of the Jerusalem Heritage House (www.heritagehouse.org.il) and Co-Director of Young Jewish Conservatives (www.youngjewishconservatives.org). He lives in the Old City of Jerusalem with his wife and 6 children....

I was sitting this morning with an American Jew. He was previously very active in his Jewish community in America and just finished his service in the Israeli military. I asked him if he knew that the GA was coming up and he said, "you mean the G8?". I said, "no, the General Assembly of Jewish Federations". He said, "oh, what do they do?". EXACTLY

The reason I asked this guy about the GA this morning is because I had just finished reading an article in the Jpost by Gil Troy called: "The Tel Aviv GA: Building Bridges, Not Dissing Jerusalem". see here

I think it behooves us to examine some of the points in the piece, and its my blog, so let's do that.

The author attempts to defend the speakers at the upcoming conference as representing diverse viewpoints, against the backdrop of Caroline Glick's assertion (here) that only "center-left to far-left" will be represented, by citing an planned appearance by President Rivlin. Is he serious? Rivlin is hardly considered a right-winger these days and besides, he's the PRESIDENT!!! Anyone else "right-wing" coming to speak? If so, the author doesn't seem to feel the need to name them. Any of them. (BECAUSE THEY DON'T EXIST!!!!)

After a brief interlude where the author humbly praises himself for being willing to speak at the conference despite horrific physical conditions, Troy gives us a sneak preview of what he plans to talk about: how great Birthright is, how bad the leaders on both the American and Israeli side are and the need to listen to each other.

Hard to believe he's going to drive all the way from Jerusalem to Tel Aviv to deliver that bombastic package of inspiration.

Its simple folks: The irrelevance of this entire charade could not be more apparent! Look at the major issues facing world North American Jewry:

Jewish Education in America - Federations are at best minimally involved

The Jewish Presence in Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria - not involved

College Campuses - anti-Israel and assimilation - no Federation involvement

These people seem to be allergic to anything remotely meaningful. They are busy with "women of the wall", reform and conservative whining in Israel, everything anti-Trump, including illegal mexican immigration....blah, blah, blah.

I just looked at their website, and I'd rather go to a random funeral than go back to that.

This whole thing is just a lame opportunity for some socially challenged Jews in America (those incapable of assimilating) to hang out with a bunch of Israeli leftists (self-haters) and together they think they can conspire to find ways to weaken Judaism and the Jewish People.

Nothing, really nothing, to see here.
