According to the best estimates over 500,000 Syrians have perished since 2011 in a war that seems to have no end.

The President should be commended for trying to stop Bashar Assad from using chemical weapons. President Trump has sent a solid and important message to the global community. The President also deserves kudos for dealing a severe blow to ISIS. Much of the responsibility for the genocide in Syria falls on the watch of President Obama. Many opportunities to change the dynamics in Syria were missed by the former President. Unfortunately, the situation in Syria has further deteriorated.

President Obama had an opportunity to step in to fill the void before Russia and Iran did so. Early on Assad could have been replaced but that is not the case any longer. Once Russia and Iran bailed him out, America could do little to replace him.

The presence of Russia and Iran now complicates the dire situation. Hezbollah has gained strength and its troops hardened by the conflict. All of this spells trouble not just for America but for Israel too. It is time for a coherent strategy in Syria. America and the President must be prepared to take the lead. I agree with selective bombing of Syrian targets which both America and Israel have engaged in.

The pressure cannot be let up till Assad is brought to the negotiating table. I sincerely believe this is possible. Syria is waiting for a diplomatic solution. This can be achieved because the President is leading from strength and a bolstered military. A special envoy along the lines of a Kissinger should bring all the angry and warring parties together.

This may be easier said than done. America has to take the lead on this. Only America can stop the war in Syria. Enough innocent people have died. Cool heads have to prevail. It will take some innovative ideas and maneuvers but if the President can bring North Korea's Kim Jong-Un to the table he can bring Assad there as well.
