Were you there,

Did you drive the train,

Did you dig the grave,

Did you stop the child from playing?

Were you there,

Do you remember?

The smell of burning flesh

that filled the air

Were you there,

Do you remember?

The synagogue on the corner

The song of the Cantor

The words of the Rabbi

The peculiar people

who wore the yellow star –

the tailor, the baker, the candlestick maker

Were you there,

Do you remember?

The house by the road,

the house you stole,

because you knew the man

Who drove the train,

Who dug the grave,

Who stopped the child from playing
