This is a story of one Maurice the fish who swims in the Lake and descends from the Ocean.

Maurice is a happy fish, proud of his heritage, quite congenial, and loves to sing – loudly.  He can often be heard saying, “Look at my beautiful scales, fins, and I sing – LAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.”

Lately Maurice has been contemplating returning to the Ocean of his ancestors and has made an application to the Ocean Fish Council in Jerusalem, who have in turn invited Maurice to a Skype interview.

Maurice became very excited, taking extra care to polish his scales to a high degree of glossiness and combing out his fins so they look long and lush, especially his tail fin which he likes to show off as he swishes around the Lake singing.

On the day of the interview Maurice looked marvellous, albeit a little nervous:

“Hello Maurice,” said the Ocean Fish Council.

“Shalom,” said Maurice excitedly, wanting to show off one of his few words of Hebrew and make a good impression.  “I am a fish, look at my beautiful scales, fins, and I sing – LAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.

“Look Maurice, about your application, you must understand we are a small Ocean and we only offer one type of membership.  It’s Platinum and the fish love it - we call it Heredity Plus!

“Did I mention I smell like salt?”  interrupted Maurice slightly.  “My Lake friends sometimes like to tease me, in the nicest way possible, saying ‘Maurice, no matter how long you have lived in the Lake, you still smell like salt.’  They kind of like it and I like it,” said Maurice proudly.

“Yes, we see you have beautiful scales, fins, and gills like Alberto Mizrahi.  We are also impressed that you managed to keep your saltiness.  However, you don’t have the Plus needed to qualify for our Ocean’s membership, because you follow and insist on following the Lake’s rules and beliefs.”

“But I am a fish, look at my beautiful scales, fins, and I sing – LAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA,” protested Maurice to no avail.

“Maurice I’m afraid the Ocean Fish Council, in accordance with the Ocean Law of Return, has ruled on your application as follows:  Heredity alone is not enough to make Maurice the fish a fish.  In any case, Maurice the fish who descends from the Ocean is only a fish if he also follows the Rules and Beliefs of the Ocean, which he does not.  The Ocean Fish Council understands that those who hate fish who descend from the Ocean and want to kill them, don’t care about the latter.”

Maurice the fish who descents from the Ocean and swims in the Lake is a fish.

Maurice the fish who descents from the Ocean and swims in the Lake is not at all a fish, he is a turtle.

A fish is a fish is a fish, whether he has a swimming belief or no belief at all.

If a fish changes his swimming beliefs, he is no longer a fish.
