President Trump made the much anticipated call to wish the Jews a Happy New Year. He stated that the tradition of Judaism "strengthens our nation and inspires us all." Unfortunately, the Reform Movement boycotted the call.

The President made sure to say, We forcefully condemn those who seek to promote Anti-Semitism". The Reform have not yet figured out that President Trump is one of the Jewish People's best friends ever in the White House. I saw this happen in New York City when Rudy Giuliani was elected Mayor with about 40% of the Jewish Vote in 1993 and rose to over 70% of the Jewish vote including many in the Reform and Conservative Movements in 1997. In the meantime the Reform continue to pressure and harass the Prime Minister of Israel to allow egalitarian Prayer Services at the main section of the Western Wall.

The Reform have gone to Israel's Supreme Court to change the status quo that has served Israel well since the expansion of the Western Wall Plaza soon after the Six Day War of 1967. As it turns out the control of the Western Wall was granted to the Orthodox as far back as 1924 by none other than the Conservative Movement.

Rabbi Cyrus Adler who took over after Solomon Schecter and headed up the Conservative Movement was indeed fully in favor of the Orthodox in control. One could go back even further and understand that the Western Wall was given over to the Orthodox to administrate. In 1889 Abdul Hamid II issued a "firman" stating,"That there shall be no interference with the Jews' places of devotional visits and pilgrimage, that are situated in the localities which are dependent on the Chief Rabbinate, nor with the practice of their ritual." This mainly related to the Western Wall.

This particular "firman" was upheld again in 1889, 1893 and 1909. When the British took over they made it clear that the courts had no business being involved in Israel's Holy Sites. During the British Mandate, "No cause or matter in connection with the Holy Places or Religious buildings or sites in Palestine or the rights or claims relating to the different religious communities in Palestine shall be heard or determined by any Court in Palestine." Rabbi Cyrus Adler's acceptance of Orthodox control over the Kotel should lead to an open and shut case. We Jews have too many enemies trying to destroy us. Igniting a controversy over the Kotel only feeds fuel to our enemies fire.

It is time to stop the shenanigans and get with the program. The status quo has served the majority of Jews around the world quite well. The Reform have many problems to address. The Western Wall should not be one of them.
