Life Lessons with Judy Simon
Yehudit Tayar lives with her family in Bet Horon in the Benjamin Region for over 30 years, serves as an emergency first response medic, sits on the Board of Directors of Hatzalah Yehudah and Shomron, and is one of the spokespeople of the Jewish pioneers in Yesha.
So here it is the begining of the month of Adar B- during this month the history of our Nation witnessed perseuction, bravery, unity and miracles. It has been proven that the outcome of persecution of our people must be met with bravery unity and this will afford miracles. Not always are the miracles immediate i.e. the result of the Holocaust where our families were hunted down and massacred - even those Jews who felt that their identity as citizens of the same countries in Europe and indeed throughout the world would prevent them being counted amongst our people learned that a Jew is a Jew no matter how assimilated he is. And only after this mass murder was the establishment of the State of Israel declared.
It makes one wonder how short and limited our National memory is when you study the history of the Oslo Accords, and all of the resulting negotiations, agreements, the price we have paid in Jewish lives, and the weakness of the Israeli governments on key issues like the sovereignty of our historical regions- Jerusalem, the Temple Mount, Judea Samaria and the Jordan Valley. The eternal heritage that our Nation has can never be given up and we pray for the government of Israel, and the Prime Minister Netanyahu to stand firm and declare to both Obama and the world that Israel has sovereign rights eternally to these areas.
Personally this month is one of painful memories of loss of loved ones alongside of the National meaning of Adar B- and the tradition that with the entrance of Adar we rejoice- yes we do rejoice but also we mourn the loss of our families- my cousins Rav Eli and Dina Horwitz HY"D and Tal Kherman HY"D the daughter of dear friends from Haifa Ron Kherman and the family, and the Fogel , Ben Yishai families who lost their loved ones, the Fogel family in Itamar three years ago, mother father and three of the children HY"D, who amongst others they were murdered simply because they were Jewish.
The pain never goes away and also the knowledge that these tragedies can so easily be repeated because of the endless hate directed against Israel and the Jewish people and our government not demanding that the world accept our eternal right to live here in safety!
Just a few days ago I attended a special session in the Knesset regarding UNRWA and their billions of dollars given to perpetuate, teach and encourage the hatred against Israel - not only the Jewish communities in Yesha or Jerusalem- but all of Israel. The Center for Near East Policy Research documented the Arab schools and how the children are being taught to hate, and murder Jews and how a suicide murderer is made into a hero inside of the schools of the UNRWA. To teach children blind hatred and to ignore the true history of the Jewish heritage here in our eternal homeland and the history of this region is the agenda of the UNRWA and is ignored certainly by the world but also the governments of Israel do not do enough to prevent this. The UNRWA has its own records wherein any Arab child born anywhere in the world - even today - is documented as a refugee from "Palestine" bringing the number of what it calls "refugees" to 10 million people.
It is time especially now for Israel to stand up proudly and declare sovereignty over our eternal Homeland now and forever also in honor and memory of our loved ones z"l.
One of the most important things in being Jewish is unity and support for one another, especially in a time of need. Our families from Gush Katif must never be forgotten or neglected, and a group of giving selfless women, the Committee for Gush Katif Bridal Showers, have for the past eight and a half years made sure that the love and care would be translated into what we call, "Hachnasat Kala" or a Bridal shower. Throughout the long years since the expulsion and the sorrow and pain of our families, these women have made sure that every Gush Katif bride and groom was remembered with the most basic necessities they needed to begin their new lives.
Women from all over Israel and indeed all over the world have taken part in this beautiful gesture of brotherly love and support.
Now the Committee is celebrating the showering of 1000 brides from the destroyed communities of Gush Katif. They have teamed up with the wonderful, talented women from Gush Etzion/Efrat's annual dance extravaganza "Dames of the Dance", who are volunteering their talents in a special performance of their show dedicated to the milestone of 1000 brides of Gush Katif, and in order to help future brides start off on the right foot.
It is my prayer that we shall be blessed with achdut-unity- love of our Torah our Land and our people and return to rebuild each community that was destroyed amen.
The performance will be on Wednesday, March 5, at Gerard Be'char in Jerusalem at 8 p.m. Please come and help these wonderful women give the brides an unforgettable start in their lives.

As I travel around the vital regions of Israel, deep in our national history: Jerusalem, Yesha, the Jordan Valley my heart fills with gratitude. I am blessed to not only live in the heartland but also to work there. With gratitude and pain. Gratitude that we are here and live in the heartland of our eternal Land, and pain to see how the Arabs are grabbing our lands and the impotence of our governments to not only prevent this, but them not daring to declare that this Land is ours forever.
Turning to the situtation in Europe as they condemn Israel for extremism and brutal treatment of Arabs, we witness a frightening reminder of the Anti-semitism of these very countries today who forbid Kosher slaughter and Brit Mila to the Jews living there. This shocking reminder of the beginning of the sanctions and restrictions for Jews in the beginning of the Nazi campaign to murder our people, is indeed not something to ignore.
The fact that we are blessed with Israel is not only imperative for us Israelis who live here, but perhaps even more so for the Jews in the galut- outside of Israel. The tragedy that so many of our people have lost the connection to our heritage will not protect them if G-d forbid we see a repeat of history and persecution of the Jewish people.
I remember as a young girl what Israel was like before 1967 and our liberation of these historical and vital regions. I remember the preparations during the "period of waiting" as it was called preceeding the War- the grim prediction was far from the actual outcome of these fierce battles. I remember the wanton destruction of synagogues, our graveyards, the filth around the Kotel that was deliberately directed by the Arabs who had occupied our Land. I remember the prayers of joy when we heard that the Temple Mount is in our hands, that Jerusalem was reunified.
As a young girl I remember the feeling of disbelief as I approached the Wall- the Kotel - and for the first time was actually able to be near the Temple Mount., the return to the City of our Fathers- Hevron. We have seen what happens when we are not on the ground in these areas. We have suffered the pain of the price of the hatred of our enemies no matter what the borders of Israel are, indeed even before the establishment of our State of Israel.
Today, perhaps more than ever before, the Prime MInister and government of Israel must be strong and protect our Land and never bend to the threats of Kerry or anyone else- because the writing is on the wall- and not on the Kotel -but on the wall of history- that if we do not stand strong and demand our rights to this Land, the Jewish people will be in danger.
We see and hear the testimony of our so called "partners in the Peace Talks". They have no qualms in being honest and declaring that on one hand they will never accept a Jewish State in Israel (look at the official Tourism Map of the PA- no Israel exists there), and on the other hand the education of their youth to hate Jews and the exalting of the terrorist murderers as "brave heroes".
We here in our Land have a blessing and a curse- the blessing of living here and fighting to protect the Jewish heritage forevermore and never to endanger our existance here, and the curse of weakness - of fear- of the price we will have to pay if the government does not give in to the demands of the American government with their flying representative- Kerry.
We, the eternal Nation, are not afraid of a long way- we know that it is our right and our destiny to protect our Torah, our Land and our people. This is what must be done no matter what pressures or threats our Prime Minister and government receive. The destiny of the Jewish people is not something to endanger.
Before I get into the National Issues I wish to say a few brief words on a personal level. On Rosh Hodesh Adar my beloved mother-in-law passed away. Linda Tayar z"l a survivor of the massacre of our people by the Nazi's. Her entire life was giving and emunah and love and we were blessed. Always, even at the end when she suffered so with no lungs working and barely breathing she would mouth, "Baruch Hashem always Baruch HaShem." I was able to convince her a few years ago to give testimony at Yad V'Shem - after which she came home broken, apologizing for not being able to tell everything and I told her how imperative whatever she could relate was. May we always do good in loving memory amen.
On the National level we are living in a surrealistic reality where the governments of Israel continue to carry on the facade of ever reaching a situation here in our eternal Homeland where we can live in "peaceful existance" with our Arab neighbors. In 2110 Highway 443 was re-opened to traffic for Arabs claiming that in all fairness they must have passage. I hesitate to restate the warnings we issued to the goverhment of the danger of attacks that we have suffered from Arabs- the injuries and murders.
Last week it was decided because of the numerous terror attacks, rocks, fire bombs etc on Highway 443, VIP's, Ministers and the like are not allowed to travel on this road because of the dangers there.
We continue to travel on this road with our children and here are some of the results of attacks by Arabs who are determined to murder Jews simply because we are Jews. We will not run, away we will not leave here, and it is up to the government to protect us by preventing these murderous attacks and not forbidding members of the govenment from facing the same dangers the citizens of Israel face which they continue to ignore. The Prime Minister and the members of the government are responsible for allowing this to happen by encouraging the enemies of our people and allowing them to believe that one day we will either be forced to leave, to be torn from our homes and lives as our families in Gush Katif were - or left to the dangers of being under the Palestinian Authority who praise the terrorist murderers and teach to murder Jews. Our enemies are waiting and hoping to destroy Israel and the Jewish people, and security is being realistic to the true situation and not fearing reprisals by economic boycott or other threats.

Today is International remembrance day for the Shoah (Holocaust). It is always important to remember the persecution, torture and murder of our families simply because they were Jews.
The international community for the most part, continue the tradition of singling out the Jews, today in the Jewish State, and also abroad, and willingly ignore the continued violence, both verbal and physical directed against Israel.
I personally have seen a remarkable break from this tradition of hating the Jews and Israel with an amazing couple, Gro and Bruno Wenske from Norway and Germany. Back in the first days of Oslo when I was privileged to be on the steering committee of establishing the immediate response teams in Judea, Samaria, Gush Katif and the Jordan Valley, and persuading MDA to allow us to have ambulances within these areas to save precious lives, I first met Gro.
A wonderful lady, Miriam from Petach Tikvah came to my office and introduced me to Gro saying, "this woman wishes to help you." LIttle by little the incredible story of Gro, Bruno, and her late father, Per Faye - Hanson was revealed. A story of courage, love and determination combined with emunah in the L-rd.
Per Fay - Hanson was in the underground in Norway and saved many of our families exposing himself, his wife, Gro, a small toddler ,and her infant sister to danger, and death, in order to try and save the lives of the Jews in Norway. I never met him because he passed away before the Olso Agreements, the time in which I first met the Wenske family.
Gro told me of her late fathers love for Israel, and the Jewish people and his determination to protect our people both during the Shoah, during the struggle to establish a Jewish State in our Land, and after the establishment of the State of Israel .
Gro and Bruno carry on the heritage of her father by helping us both here in Israel and also abroad in Europe. To quote Gro, "my Father did not wish to accept recognition from Yad V'Shem (the Holocaust Memorial in Israel) he said that it was enough that the L-rd of Israel allowed me to save HIS people I do not need more than that."
This special man was busy both here in Israel and abroad and was very well known to David Ben-Gurion, Israel's first Prime Minister, who in fact sent Per Fay-Hanson as the first shaliach (messenger) to the United States after the establishment of the State of Israel to convince Jews to make Aliyah and come home to Israel.
Finally a few years ago after much persuading Gro agreed to accept the recognition in her late Father's name by Yad V'Shem. Per Fay-Hansen was recognized as a Righteous Gentile.
The dedication of these wonderful, modest and giving people can be a lesson for all -Jew and Gentile alike. I have had the zchut (privilege) of not only having them as dear beloved friends, but also on several occassions being part of the conference, that they hold in Norway each summer. The hall of the conference is full of Israeli flags, photographs and maps of Israel and begins literally with the National Anthem of Israel, HaTikvah (the hope). Hundreds of Gentiles come from all over Europe to attend and honor Israel.
Today especially, as we commerate the Shoah it is time to express our endless gratitude to those brave, selfless Righteous Gentiles who endangered themselves and their families to try and save our people.
I know that my beloved friends will feel embarrassed by me giving them this attention, but I feel that it is important to give credit and thanks to this amazing family and all of their love and efforts for Israel and the Jewish people.
We will never forgive or forget what was done to our people- to our Nation and will be even more determined to protect our Torah, our Land and our people for this is the heritage and responsiblity that was left to us by our families who perished in the Shoah.
We are grateful to Gro and Bruno for carrying on the sacred work of her Father Per Fay -Hanson z"l and for their selfless endless love for our Nation and Land.
Gro and Bruno and family, bless you and keep you . With much love and respect in the name of the people of Israel and the pioneers in Yesha.
