Our Young, on the road to early death

When we were in Israel in June, it struck me that some of the cream of Israeli youth had a nasty, dangerous habit.

While in the central Jerusalem bus station I observed how many of the male and female soldiers smoked. While on the streets, I also noticed this and am very saddened that, no where were there signs, posters or any advertising about not smoking in the first place or options to quit.

It would seem that in the schools there should be programs telling the teens that there are 2,000 toxic chemicals in cigarettes. Nicotine, only 2 drops can kill. The other chemicals do their damage as well.

If only the government would tell the population, particularly the young that over 80% of illnesses that put people into care homes are directly caused by smoking.

Most people are aware that deep breaths are relaxing. Most of the time, the only time smokers take deep breaths is when they inhale.

Tobacco is sugar cured, which is why when a smoker inhales they get a sugar hit. This is why when they are hungry, to keep their weight down, girls smoke instead of eating.

In the schools there should be programs targeting the youth. In the army there should be programs to help the young soldiers resist starting.  If they are smokers, there should be pro-active programs to get them off the weed.

It is an expensive, dirty habit. The government gets taxes from the sale of cigarettes so it does have a real interest in stopping the behavior.

My grandson just graduated from high school in Israel. The peer pressure to smoke was terrible but fortunately, he resisted. It isn't cool to not smoke. This is the age group needing the education the most.

Take kids to the cancer wards and have them talk to patients who smoked. Ask them if they have a friend or relative that has chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or emphysema how hard is it to draw a breath.

In my opinion, the schools have a duty to have anti-smoking programs as does the army. What are you going to do about it?

Think about it!

Victims, here we go again

Victims develop a tolerance for bizzare behavior and here we go again!

According to an article last week in the Hebrew language weekly newspaper Besheva written by Chagit Rotenberg, farmers in the Negev and Gallilee are being regularly beaten, terrorized and harassed by local Bedoins attempting to drive them off their land. According to Besheva, some have already been driven off, their land stolen.

Police do nothing,,,who is paying them off to not take action against the perpertrators? Example, a farmer was driving his truck and was being followed by Bedoins who when he stopped they beat him badly and stole his truck filled with equipment. The farmer complained to the police, the attackers were arrested and then released without being charged. Again, who is paying off whom?

The Besheva newspaper reports that Yoel Zilberman, a former officer in an elite IDF unit, requested to be released from duty to protect his father who owns a ranch and was beaten by Bedoin. Yoel started guarding his father's ranch and learned that other farmers were experiencing the same attacks and harassment.

Yoel Zilberman's protection posse

Yoel formed a mounted posse to assist protecting other farms from his father's fate. My question is, why do the farmers need protection and why aren't they protecting themselves?

I have been told stories of those who did protect themselves from Arabs and ended up in jail. I also just learned that if the police pay attention to the Dromi bill that was passed within the last year or so, the victims are entitled to protect themselves and their property without fear of being jailed and prosecuted,,,about time. Now, someone needs to tell the corrupt police about this law. If the police can't handle this and forgoe the extra income, let the army do the job.

Bedoin are also extorting protection cash from farmers so that they won't be attacked on their land. Is the Israeli population so blind, selfish and complacent as to not care what is happening in heavy agricultural areas or, do you want to be held hostage with the Arabs controlling farmland and the supply and prices of vegetables and meat?

These farmers are still connected to the land, our Jewish historical land and need everyone's support.

It's appalling that the "regular media" hasn't addressed this, So I suspect most Israelis don't know what is going on and worse, probably don't care.

It will be interesting to see what the reactions will be when an Arab knocks on your door and tells you the property is now his- get out, your government has given it to me,,,Tel Aviv look out!

Think about it!
